An eastbound Norfolk Southern stack train crosses the Fort Wayne Line in Bucyrus, Ohio. The train is on the NS Sandusky District and the junction is known on the railroad as Colsan, which stood for Columbus and Sandusky.

As I was sitting on the side of the train facing north I noticed that the size and scope of the industry of this place seemed to be even greater out the windows facing the south.  It was apparent to me that the train passenger gets a view of the Gary Works that no one else sees except those who work there.  Despite the level of activity there are scattered buildings that are now unused, some shells of what they’d once been.  Implicit with the industry here is the whole economic interrelationship between Great Lakes ports–those that ship the ore and those that receive it for their steel mills.

After we’d finally passed the area, blue sky was again apparent.  I’d like to get shots of this area that I missed on the way west, but my eastbound leaves Chicago at 9:30pm on April 8.  Night photography might be dicey.  These are my photos from March 20, 2016.
